Kansas City Chiefs Linked to Former Defensive Player of The Year With 31 INTs
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have few remaining needs across the roster, but have yet to fill the hole created by trading All-Pro L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans earlier this offseason.

That could be about to change as free agency drags on and the price for accomplished veterans begins to come down.

After not selecting a cornerback until the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chiefs could be an ideal landing spot for one of the most accomplished corners still available on the open market.

Kansas City Chiefs Urged to Sign Stephon Gilmore

Following a strong season with the Dallas Cowboys, Stephon Gilmore remains available in free agency and could be a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs and defensive coordinator Steve Spagunolo’s scheme.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox put together a list of the top free agents who could help contending teams in 2024, and suggests Gilmore as a top target for the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The only real question remaining for Kansas City is whether it can adequately replace Sneed,” Knox writes. “Trent McDuffie is a budding star, but Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams have only really shown glimpses to this point. Kansas City didn’t add to its cornerback room before taking a sixth-round flier on Tennessee’s Kamal Hadden. Bringing back Steven Nelson, who spent his first four years with the Chiefs, could make some sense. However, Nelson noted on social media that he didn’t like Steve Spagnuolo’s system upon his departure, so there may not be mutual interest.

“Kansas City could instead turn to Stephon Gilmore, who spent last season with Dallas. Gilmore was a strong performer for the Cowboys in 2023 and allowed an opposing passer rating of only 82.7 in coverage while starting all 17 games.”

Gilmore’s veteran presence could help McDuffie and the Chiefs’ young secondary, while landing in Kansas City would represent the veteran corner’s best chance to chase a Super Bowl ring this upcoming season.
