Warriors’ Klay Thompson Has ‘Mutual’ Interest With Surprise Free Agency Suitor
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

As Klay Thompson approaches NBA free agency, a new suitor has emerged: the Orlando Magic.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Thompson and the Magic have a “mutual” interest in a potential deal, making them a team to watch in the upcoming free agency period. The Magic can clear over $60 million in cap space, making them a viable option for the four-time NBA champion.

“The Magic can open up an excess of sixty million dollars in cap space this offseason…One name to keep an eye on, Klay Thompson, I’m told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson,” Charania reported.

Thompson, 34, has spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors, winning five NBA All-Star selections and earning a reputation as one of the league’s top shooters. Despite being eligible for an extension, Thompson declined a two-year, $48 million offer from the Warriors, indicating a disparity in expectations.

After overcoming significant injuries, Thompson made a strong comeback last season, averaging 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 69 games. While his stats have dipped slightly this season, he remains a formidable shooter with a 43.0% field goal percentage.

As Thompson enters free agency, Charania previously reported, “He’s shown still that he can be Klay Thompson…I would expect both Florida teams, both LA teams [to show interest]…he’s going to test the marketplace.”

The Magic presents an intriguing option, offering a fresh start and significant playing time. The Warriors, meanwhile, will likely try to re-sign their veteran guard, but Thompson’s decision will ultimately depend on his priorities and the best fit for his future.
